Important Definitions

For the purpose of our competition we will be using the following definitions:

  1. Professional Musicians: If your main source of income is as a performing musician, you are a professional musician.  

  2. If your main source of income is not as a performing musician, and you rely on other sources of income, you are a non-professional musician. 

  3. A singer/songwriter writes/ composes and performs their own original music. 

Who can enter?

The Seaway Valley Music Competition is open to any non-professional, non-touring instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, and vocal artist.  Registrants may register in more than one category.

Violin/fiddle

Guitar

  • You can play either the acoustic or electric guitar. 

  • Acoustic guitars without a built-in pick up will be mic’d. We will provide the microphones and cables for this.

  • Bring your own patch cable for your acoustic with a built-in pick up or electric guitar.

 

Violin/fiddle

  • Violins without a built-in pick up will be mic’d. We will provide the microphones and cables for this.

  • Bring your own patch cable if you have a built-in pick up.

Piano

  • An ELECTRIC piano will be onsite.

Vocal

With MP3/MP4
With instrument

With MP3 or MP4

  • Track must be high-quality

  • Provide the track to Harmony Concerts at least one week prior to the event.  

 

With an instrument

  • An entrant in this category may also play their own instrument for accompaniment. Provide your own patch cable. 

  • An entrant in this category can have ONE instrumental accompanist. Provide your own patch cable.

Singer/songwriter

  • Must provide a copy of their signed original work (words and music) to Harmony Concerts at least one week prior to the competition. 

  • Provide your own patch cable; microphones will be supplied.

Prizes

  • Up to $500 First Prize in each Instrumental, vocal and singer/songwriter categories. 

 

  • A potential opening act gig during the 2024 Harmony Concert Series (could be in any of our locations)

 

RJS Legacy Award

One participant will take home the first RJS Legacy Award for overall originality, commitment to the arts, musicianship, stage presence and musical prowess. 

Judging

Judging will be based on:

  • Musicianship

  • Stage presence

  • Musical prowess

All accepted registrants will receive a bio of each judge, in each category, along with the performance schedule. The schedule will not be finalized until after the registration deadline.

Registration fee (per category)

  • non-refundable $35 registration fee. $15 from each registration will be donated to the WDMH Foundation Fund.

Registration deadline

  • June 1, 2023

  • Registration is on a first come, first registered basis. A limited number of spots are available in each category. 

  • Registration fees will be invoiced upon participant acceptance into the competition.
